The University of Nairobi (UoN) celebrated the award of ISO 9001 – 2000 Quality Management System (QMS) standard on Thursday 7th of August 2008 after a journey that began in the year 2006. The process involved various stages with different activities spread over the three-year period. The award was officially presented to the Vice-Chancellor Prof. George Magoha by the Managing Director, Kenya Bureau of Standards, Eng Kioko Mang’eli in an elaborate function that included the Minister for Higher Education Science and Technology, Dr. Sally Kosgei as the Chief Guest.
In her remarks, the minister lauded the University for the landmark achievement and challenged management to set even higher targets to compete with leading higher education institutions worldwide. Dr. Kosgei was a lecturer in the Department of History in 1970s.
Noting but the peaceful environment is responsible for recent achievements at the university, the Chancellor, Dr. Joseph Barrage Wanjui thanked students and staff for achieving ISO 9001 -2000 status and management for inspiring students.
Other prominent personalities present during this fete were Prof. Crispus Kiamba, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Permanent Secretary in-charge of Public Sector Reforms, Mr. Richard E. Ndubai. Chairman of the University Council, Mr. John Simba, and other prominent personalities. In attendance were staff and students drawn from all the colleges.
